India’s car market is buzzing with action, and May 2025 brought a new round of sales data and numbers that will put eyes on the automotive industry in India. Nearly 3.5 lakh passenger vehicles helped the Indian automotive industry remain dynamic for another month of 2025 to round out the latest sales successes mixing and matching a reasonably priced sedan, flexible SUV and fuel-efficient hatchback. Maruti Suzuki continues going strong, but the rise of brands like Hyundai, Mahindra, and Tata reflects some good competition. - Maruti Suzuki Dzire – The First Place Finisher
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire has once again sprinted to the first place finish selling 18,084 selling units in May 2025. Priced between ₹6.84 lakh-₹9.80 lakh, the compact sedan remains visually appealing backed by a unique star-studded, five-star, Bharat NCAP safety rating, and a very compelling rate of efficiency wherever it is headed. The 13% year-on-year (YoY) growth proves why this vehicle was driving the most amounts of sales over others. This solid growth is backed by the existing fleet cab drivers that can only drive a Dzire in the fleet environment and they upgrade once every year or so. The integration of affordability, utility, and reliability remains a top three reason on not just keeping pace with other compact SUV or hatchback vehicles.
- Maruti Suzuki Ertiga – The Family Favorite
In second place, and selling 16,410 units, Maruti Suzuki Ertiga remained the most liked MPV in India. With a starting price of ₹8.69 lakh and going up to ₹13.34 lakh, it has seating capacity for 7, is fuel-efficient and Maruti have an extensive trusted after-sales service. Ertiga fell 7.4% YoY, yet, it maintains intended symbolism implying an important value proposition in a low utility segment.
- Maruti Suzuki Brezza – The SUV King
Maruti Suzuki Brezza sold best selling SUV for the year at 15,566 and grew by 10% YoY. - Maruti Suzuki Swift – The Forever Hatchback
The Maruti Suzuki Swift continues to be one of the most recognized nameplates in the country with an estimated 14,000 units sold in May 2025, moving six place with 17.8% growth on a YoY-related selling basis. Priced between ₹6.49 lakh and ₹9.60 lakh (like most Maruti Suzuki – there is a money margin) and a sporty design with peppy performance and affordability for young buyers, the Swift also has relatively low maintenance and excellent resale value!
- Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – The Practical Option
Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, came in seventh position at 13,500 units sold (estimated) and +3% YoY growth. Starting at ₹5.54 lakh to ₹7.38 lakh, this reliable practical hatchback is still a favourite of buyers. With roominess, CNG fuelled variants, and the price, the Wagon R has value for money too. With acceptable driving ergonomics and pedestrian looks, the Wagon R is a popular purchase for small families and a staple for fleet operators!
- Maruti Suzuki Fronx – The Spectacular Debutant
Completing the leaderboard of the HR 2023, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx, a spectacular crossover achieved eighth position, 12,500 units(approx.) sold, showing a surge of 16.3% YoY. Priced from ₹7.54 – ₹13.04 Lakh, a bold exterior and implementation of features make it very attractive for younger buyers looking for something other than another ‘traditional SUV’.
- Tata Punch – The Mini Hero of the Compact SUV
The Tata Punch was a drop to ninth position, moving 12,000(estimated) sold, showing an MoM growth of 5%. Priced from ₹6.15 Lakh to ₹10.49 Lakh, the rugged looks, good ground clearance and price make it a strong player in the sub-compact SUV space. It’s Punch EV variant adds to the portfolio.
- Tata Nexon – The High Performer of Safety
The Tata Nexon sold 11,500(estimated) sold, with a surge of 10.8% YoY. Priced from ₹7.99 Lakh to ₹15.50 Lakh with a 5-star rating and premium features, the Tata Nexon is a tough contender for the safety inclined buyer. Nonetheless, a total drop of 15% in their MoM does show trying times ahead for compact SUV sellers!

- Maruti’s Hold Strengthens: Maruti Suzuki’s grip on the market is solidifying as the Indian manufacturer sold 1,35,962 units, and now holds the highest market share of 37.5%, which is down -5.6% YoY. Its focus on safety and expanding CNG variants keeps the manufacturer ahead.
- Seems Like SUVs Are Here to Stay: SUVs claim such a share of sales, with the Brezza and Creta leading sales. Mahindra and Tata have a very strong SUV lineup that is making moves to close the gap on Hyundai.
